Animal magic!

Something exciting is happening at Melbourne Hall Gardens.

Lord and Lady Ralph Kerr have been adapting an area within their exquisite gardens to house some of their quirkiest and cutest pets.

Suri is one of two breeds of the alpaca, the other being the huacaya. Of 3.7 million alpacas worldwide, less than 10% are thought to be of the suri breed. Alpacas are bred for their fleece and originate from South America.

Currently in residence there are:

  • Pigs
  • Pygmy goats
  • Rare breed Portland Sheep
  • Rare breed Suri alpacas
  • British miniature ponies
  • Rabbits
  • Guinea pigs
  • Variety of chickens
  • Ornamental breeds of duck

With plans to add more wonderful and exotic rare breed creatures in the very near future!

Keeper and curator Alice Robinson explains what Animal Magic is all about:

“What’s unique about Animal Magic at Melbourne Hall Gardens is that we can offer totally bespoke, one-to-one experiences with our animals. Families can book a ‘play date’ and have an exclusive, up close and personal experience learning all about their chosen animal.”

The Kerr family have always been passionate about animals and they wanted to share their pets with the wider community. It’s a fantastic collection of rare breed animals, right on the doorstep for many families.

All animals can be seen within their paddocks and fed with feed bought from the entrance hut by visitors, everyday that the gardens are open.
